"You wanted a compact, right?"

"Yes, sir."

"Well, too bad. This is 'Murica. We don't got no fancy wussy euro-crap hatchbacks. We gonna get you a REAL car!"

This is how I imagine the conversation at the rental desk went.

I usually hate when they do that. Biz trip in an unfamiliar, packed city, "other side" driving, and they "upgrade" you to something using more gas and harder to park (lookin' at you Hertz/Toyoda Naha...). It did work in my favor once, though. Had to take 4 adults and two kids to a cabin for 5 days, including all the coolers, gear, etc. I looked at the price for a proper Giant Van, but there was no way I could choke down the cost. So, I booked a minivan, and figured we'd just stack everything up and make do. When we get to the counter, they say they're out of minivans and offer some sort of nice but sedan/lux thing. I said, "Normally, yes, but the reason I booked a minivan is 4 adults, 2 kids in car seats, and a week of vacation gear. What can you do for me?". Counter clerk was awesome (National, FWIW), said, "I see, let me find out what we have." She got us a 15 passenger Ford van, same price, and multiple drivers. Bonus, no BS hard-sell about GPS, fueling options, or LDW.

it did turn out to come in handy, dad carried his bicycle easily, and we went to the mountains with 3 adults and 2 kids in carseats fairly easily, rather than taking two cars. so, yeah, worked out

Nice! Every once in a while, things work out, and it's always a pleasant surprise. Sounds like a great trip.
